Tabletop Genesis - 26 December 2023: *Episode 69 - i/o The Album - After an entire year of individual track reveals (and 21 years), Peter Gabriel's i/o was finally released in December 2023. Was the song-a-month release strategy a satisfying experiment, or did it make the ultimate album release a bit anticlimactic? The Tabletop and returning guest David Priess offer their takes. [I had a similar problem to the guys in the show, wherein I had already heard all of the songs from the album beforehand, because of the release schedule of Peter bringing out a song per month online for you to stream and listen to them individually, so we already had the songs. So when the album came out, we had already heard it, which lost that magic from the first hearing that you get from the first listen of an album, or a song, etc. I get that Peter wants to do something that was different, and seemingly cool, but it removed the experience from the listener, wherein they could’ve been absorbed by the whole album experience if it had been released conventionally. I actually think that I have heard this episode before, but because of the fact that I had reinstalled the podcasting app on my iPhone, it is taking time for the app to remember what I’ve listened to. The episode is therefore showing up as not listened to. I need to listen to I/O again at some point. Mike mentions Playing For Time - I personally wish there was more of that ending feel in there, because that stands out to me.]
