Friday May 21st 2021 - 

The blurb -

Got into bed at about 9 o’clock after getting in from work at about half past eight. 

Woke up at a quarter past three, breakfast, coffee, 15 minutes of editing time, out to pick something up, got ready, went to work.

Nothing happened other than the regular run.

Got home at 7am. Podcast listening wasn’t as originally intended, but fun.

Beatles Books - Joe Wisbey chats with author/writer/publisher and co-host of the podcast Blacklisted, John Mitchinson, about The Beatles Anthology, one of my favourite Beatles related books going. A very authorised picture of the story of the band. 

Random Trek - Scott chats with journalist, editor, and co-host of the podcast Robby The Robot’s Waiting, Dave Bradley, who was also a past editor of SFX magazine, which I’ve read every issue of since its inception now over 25 years ago! This time they are talking about the Star Tek: Enterprise episode Fifht Or Flight. I agree that the episode has the A and B plots the wrong way around. I actually remember the B plot so much, and had forgotten that it wasn’t the main plot. That B plot was brilliant! 

The Mindbuzz - keeping with the thing of podcasts having podcasters as guests, here Gill is chatting with Kendra, from the self-referentially titled Coffee With Kendra. These two just go on about so much, that it’s like they’re old friends even though they’ve never verbally spoken together before. Working in the closed health industry, travelling in California. Vegan cheese, exercise, food and health suggestions. “Shots fired!” iPhone vs Android! Great discussion about “ghosting”. “They all cheat down, not up!” Gill gets some education from Kendra! 

Something For Nothing - (0:43) E8: Jerry & Steve are back for the second part of their look at the classic album 2112. Introduction is fun! Discussion about the cover art and the “robes” they’re wearing. I’m so glad that Jerry describes what he was wearing at the age of 22/23. Now they look at side two of the album. Song one is A Passage To Bangkok. Jerry takes offence at the “Oriental Riff”. Song two is The Twilight Zone. Each verse is a different episode of the show! Song three is Memories, with lyrics written by Alex Lifeson. I’ll admit that it does sound like a song that sounds like a Fly By Night style of song. The last song released by Rush that featured lyrics by Alex. Song four is Tears. They have played neither Tears or Memories live! Tears then... Lyrics written by Geddy Lee. Fabulous cover version by Alice In Chains. Song five is something for nothing. A great rocker. 

WWOAB - (0:38) E5: Microphone troubles. They had sex the night before recording! That’s positive in my book, because I think it shows a change in the relationship. Chris is out working six days a week now. $700. The backing each other up thing. Discussing things when either is working and can’t give the conversation their all. Note to Chris & Geraldine - I’ve worked night shifts almost constantly for the last ten years, and get two nights off per week. Since the initial lockdown here in the UK, I have basically just let myself keep that up on my days off as well. For most of the last ten years I basically do nothing because I’m too tired in the day to do anything, which makes things incredibly difficult. Bread disagreement. #SendHotdogs

Snapshots - (0:31): listen to the music pt 5. 1960’s girl groups. March 30th 1963 - He’s So Fine by The Chiffons. November 3rd 1962 - He’s A Rebel by The Crystals, which wasn’t actually sung by them. Be My Baby by The Ronettes never made the US number one. August 31st 1963 - My Boyfriend’s Back by The Angels (a white girl group). 

Bob Dylan Album By Album - (0:28) S6 E4:  Ben carries on the season long look at Blonde On Blonde. Show starts with shout outs to listeners, and lets people know about the extra episodes on Patreon. New York with Robbie Robertson to look at cover possibilities. Song eight is a stone cold classic - Just Like A Woman. Ben says that it’s like Sinatra before Dylan would do Sinatra covers, and I can actually imagine Sinatra doing this song. I love the six bar break riff that Ben is mentioning, and that delicious 6/8 timing. Nico from The Velvet Underground says that Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat (song seven) is definitely about Edie Sedgwick, who wore something similar. 

The Rock Guys - (0:27) E15: Bobby’s back to talk “METAL!!!!!” with an introduction to the legend of Motörhead! 🤘🏻 

Darwin’s Deviations - May 22 2021: a fun real time discussion on Zoom between Darwin & the superb artist Christina, known professionally as The Crescent Hare. I’ve chatted with Darwin before, and he’s such a cool guy.
