Sunday May the 23rd, 2021 -

The blurb -

I woke up at around three in the afternoon, after more difficulty falling asleep.

Pods Like Us is returning on May 29th (next Sunday), and I’ve got the first two episodes to their initial first edit, where I take out some bits, and now my next job is to listen to them as they are to then edit if necessary where it may not flow.

There isn’t long to get it done...

I was hoping that I would have at least the first six shows completely edited before next Sunday, so that I would be ahead of the curve.

Luckily though I am recording the tenth episode for season three on Tuesday, which is a great position to be in.

A young common newt at Elston

Mind you, I had about that many ready for season one and still ended up worrying because of episodes being postponed and it getting close to the wire.

Luckily I haven’t had a case of not having an episode to put out during season time though.

As a bit of a tease I will say that I am carrying on playing with the format, and you can expect some differences in the people that I’m talking to about podcasts.

An alarm call in the night put me behind a fair bit. It was nearly half an hour’s drive from where I got the call, and then I was a good while working out what to do, as the site had changed since the last time I’d been there. The cause was in an area that wasn’t there the previous times I’d been there over the last six years.

The ‘casts -

The Corona Diaries - (1:11) E55: Ant, just mute H’s mic while you do the intro? Then he wouldn’t have to hold his breath. General chat to start with, and then looking particularly at Afraid Of Sunlight. “Return to hallucinogenics for the good of the band.” “You showed them the Arnold Palmer” “of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most!“ [Diary - Mexico to New York. A boy named Aldo. Friendly driver of a Yellow Cab. Newark Airport closer to Manhattan than JFK Airport. “White lesbian pimp motherfucker!“ in New York to discuss possibility of storing in the musical Tommy.“There’s only one Tina T!” New York to home. Watched the film Backbeat on the plane. Airplane trouble at Heathrow.] After the diary Ant asks H some questions off the back of it being read. “Only a couple?” Finished with the crooncast.

Josh & Bosch - (1:13) E5: their longest show yet in what the hosts say in the intro music is a thirty minute rest. Two guests this time - Tito and Sean from the band Onward We March. Great shout outs to Devin Townshend and Einar Solberg (from Leprous). Must remember the phrase “bangover”? Playing Ozzy Osbourne on a banjo!

More snails at Orston

Spocklight - (1:38) ep 8: it’s always introduced by Liam- belated happy birthday to him. Liam, Matt & Paul are joined by Stephen Trumble, who designed the artwork for Spocklight. This time they’re looking at the film Star Trek: First Contact. To start they give their initial thoughts, and then follow that by Liam reading out the IMdB description. They’re all drinking tequila for this film. Shatner didn’t write his books? How dare you! That’s blasphemy surely? Because they were talking about script doctors they mentioned that there is a page on Letterboxd where you can find films that were script doctored by Carrie Fisher. Demolition Man sequence in the film is mentioned.

The Gerry Anderson Podcast - (1:15) E153:  presented by Jamie Anderson, Richard James  & Chris Dale. Fab fact is a UFO cast fact. Emails from Podsterons (what listeners are called). News. Facebook page chatter. Interview with actor, writer and comedian Toby Haydoke. Toby mentions Doctor Who books, and this is probably the first time since childhood that I actually remember now that I think I read a couple of Doctor Who books written by Terrance Dicks and others when I was really young )about 13 years old I would’ve thought)... Well, I never expected a memory from that age to suddenly appear tonight! Toby does a podcast called Happy Times & Places. I suppose that I’d better check that one out as well then! Chris’s randomiser picks the fireball XL5 episode Ghosts Of Space, which apparently is about space leprechauns and ghosts. Twitter feedback. Outro. Post show chat.

Out of the Blank - (1:01) E778: Robbie is speaking with Helen Tovey, who “gets nuts about prejudice, as in pre-judging people.” She is a family historian, memory keeper and editor of Family Tree magazine. Robin Williams quote. Positive and negative energy. What does your ancestry mean to you? Do things in your ancestry affect who you are? Robbie mentions a app called WOMBO. Helen mentions Tatooine from the Star Wars films. Cell memories. What could there be in the future? How things have changed. Robbie brings up Armie Hammer’s cannibalism again. A bear can smell for up to four miles? Never piss off a bear then I say!

Something For Nothing - (0:47) E10: this time Steve & Jerry are looking at side two of Test For Echo. Chit chat intro. Twitter polls - 1. Favourite song from Caress Of Steel. 2. Which tour would you choose to go and see a rush if you could? 3. Favourite Rush font. First song on side two is Totem. Second song is Dog Years. Song three is Virtuality. Oh man, Steve threw in the sound of the old style modem. “You’re an old man yelling at kids!” Song number four on site to is Resist. I kind of agree with Jerry about this one, in that it would’ve been a nice change on the album to have had this song as an acoustic number because there were a lot of acoustic numbers back in the days on rush albums so it wouldn’t have been different for them, and when they did do it live acoustically, it sounded much better. Song five is Limbo. It’s a patchwork quilt of unfinished pieces put together. Song six is Carve Away The Stone. I like the feel and meaning behind this song.

Frame By Frame: An Analysis of King Crimson - (0:24) EP15: The first show of this year, and it starts with them catching up with each other. Ryan mentioned the passing of a rapper who made the album Operation Doomsday... I will look him up later! *I looked him up, and he was MF Doom... This time Ryan and Avery are talking about the song Lady of the Dancing Water. Ryan mentions the Spotify and YouTube version of the album features an alternative take that is better in his mind. The live version on Circus sounds like it would be good from what Ryan has said. Great shout by Avery comparing it to Horizons by Genesis.

The Night’s End - (0:38) S1 Bonus: Crows & Galahs written by Jamie D Munro. Only a husband and young son are left after the recent death of the mother in an accident. A special gift that the boy has then brings some difficult realities to light. The history of the phrase “silly galahs”. Interesting twist and actually a nice ending.
