Vintage Rock Pod - (0:08) January 22: 2023: Paul looks at events and celebrity birthdays from this day in history. One mentioned is that on this day in 1959, Buddy Holly made his last recordings before he died. These recordings were overdubbed later with extra musicians, and released posthumously. The main topic this time is the song How Do You Do It by Gerry And The Pacemakers, recorded on this day in 1963, and produced by George Martin. Although it was the first number one single for a group from Liverpool, it was previously recorded by the Beatles, who decided that they didn’t want it to go out. Actually the song’s writer didn’t like the version that The Beatles did either. Paul finds out from the writer Mitch Mitchell why he didn’t like the version by The Beatles, how the eventual release came about, and what he liked about that release.

Face The Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song By Song Podcast - (0:16) episode 108A: January 11 2023: let’s see what this is about, as I’m pretty sure that the Eric’s have looked at Loser Gone Wild before now? “What’s that song all about?” Changing time signatures. Yeah, why didn’t they just pay to have a real trumpet player guest on the song, rather than Richard Tandy trying to emulate a trumpet on a synthesiser? here is a question for the two Erics - do you think that in some cases Jeff is too close to the material, and that a co-producer might have helped in some cases? Bev and Kelly are both on this song. Don Field’s take on the song includes the game “where’s Bev?” A thought from Troy / where’s the humph? Nice bit of archive from Jeff talking about the album Secret Messages. what does Madeline think?

Things We Said Today - (1:14) January 5 2023: Ken, Darren and Allan. Introductions. News. John Lennon and Paul McCartney we’re both in the US charts over the Christmas period. Darren makes an interesting point about how Christmas songs are looked at now in comparison to in years gone by. Note from me - it is strange Christmas songs have always been popular in the UK, but not so much in the US. Passing of Dame Vivienne Westwood, Oliver Walters and Ted “Kingsize” Taylor. News from Darren. Next they go into the main topic of this episode, which is about songs that Beatles members gave away to other artists. Great deep cut with Rod Stewart. Diana Krall. I’m so glad that Allan picked Run So Far by Eric Clapton. What a great quote from the Mail On Sunday about the book that Allan wrote with Adrian Sinclair - “if the devil’s in the details, then The McCartney Legacy is positively satanic!” Sign out.
