But there was a bird problem: the old chimney had to come down, and Chimney Swifts were known to nest in it. So the station decided to custom-build the swifts a new home: a Chimney Swift tower right on the front lawn. A surprising thing is that as I was listening to this, Arielle Nissenblatt had posted about it in a chat group on Instagram, where she tells people about shows she has listened to that have stood out. I wish that the rest of us could do that in the group to be honest, because there are shows that really jump out for me and I’m sure others as well. Anyway, this was fascinating, and I pictured the era that were discussing, because I was born at the end of 1970, and there was a lot of talk about the seventies and eighties. Weight was certainly ridiculed at that time. I remember that you were taken the piss out of if you were larger or even thinner to be honest. Anything that wasn’t a specific type in any way was made a joke out of. The world back then is very different to what it is now. Back then, as this episode in particular describes, the things said to those who were larger were so awful and derogatory, that some were beaten up because of it, and some even tried to take their own lives to escape that ridicule. I remember those times. I would often try to stick up for those, and now I am overweight myself.]

So many memories of recording and exchanging cassettes, and the last couple of episodes reminded me of so much. The discussion about fanzines and creating a scene reminded me of starting the Gig Guide in the Mansfield area, where I’m from, which was initially looked on as odd. There were gigs at so many pubs in the area back then, and I would include surrounding areas as well. The idea was to get each pub and club in the area to tell me what they had to long that forthcoming weeks and then print out the list with dates, venues, and times. These lists would then go to each venue, as well as shops and other businesses, to promote what was going on. Later on I caught onto online chat rooms for music scenes in the local are, as well as Retford, Doncaster, Leicester, Leeds, and other places. I made connections with different venues and artists from these areas, and then I came up with the idea of arranging series of gigs where gigs were arranged in each area for two locals acts to be supported by two or three other bands from those other areas. I miss those days, but am so glad that I did those things, even though getting up on stage to sing with the metal band Servers was embarrassing. I loved the guys and their music to bits, but musically I’m scared shitless without an instrument to give me something to do. This episode right here made me think of getting music by Porcupine Tree, Ozric Tentacles, and Eat Static, through friends who were in with this culture. Thanks so much to Steve “Wiggy” Wigsworth for introducing me to Ozric Tentacles, which then led to their offshoot Eat Static. Steven Wilson, the guy behind Porcupine Tree, is now a big thing in the progressive and alternative music world.]

But in recent decades, biologists have relocated some of their well-hidden nests - such as underneath the lava fields of Mauna Loa, an active volcano. Areas where the lava has long since cooled have deep tubes in which the ‘Ua'u can make their burrows. Despite their secretive burrows, the 'Ua'u are still at risk of predators such as feral cats.
