The Pod Files

Finally I’m catching up with posting, but with a caveat…

With one of the shows I do myself transitioning into something more, I am looking at streamlining the workload of posts and articles, which will see me finishing the Pod Files posts as they are at present.

Some aspects of my listening will be included in the weekly newsletter Podbites, of which the first issue came out on Substack this past Tuesday night.

For now though, because it’s a transition, I am hoping to get the notes cleaned up that I had prepared already, “because it’s there” as Captain Kirk said in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

The ‘casts -

(Notes spoken to Siri, and edited later if I remember

(Changed tactic now where starred dialogue denotes quoting from the show’s own notes

And who are the real people behind those robes? / JUDGE TRAVIS proves the answers to those questions are crazier than anything you've ever seen on TV.

BirdNote Daily - 28 Oct 2023: *What Makes an Efficient Flying Bird? - Every bird species uses its wings a little differently, and some are specialized for highly efficient flight. But that means going without other abilities. Swallows and hummingbirds (like this Talamanca Hummingbird) capture their food on the wing, but they can't walk. Swifts, which are acrobatic in the air, can't even perch. Yet they dazzle with the maneuverability made possible by their aerodynamic bodies.

BirdNote Daily - 29 October 2023: *How a Bird Came to Look Like a Caterpillar - The Cinereous Mourner is a small, ashy-gray bird that lives in the forest understory of the Amazon Basin. And it's taking mimicry to the next level: when viewed from above, lying alone in its cup-shaped nest, its chick is a near match to a highly toxic caterpillar - one that snakes and monkeys won't eat. The chick even waves its head like a caterpillar, increasing the illusion.

He talks about why Luke Cage changed his life but never defined him, why he values trust over prestige, and how self worth comes from being comfortable alone.

Harry's Home - [listened on Bandcamp] Part 1 Chapter 1: 12 April 2026: *”My name is Harry Castle. Before I forgot." / After an incident between his roommate and their carer at his assisted living flat, Harry unwillingly finds himself back home with his family; permanently busy and pre-occupied daughter Theresa and adult grandchildren Keith and Laurie. Distracted with their own lives, how can they possibly provide the support Harry needs? / Attempting to cajole the family into prioritising Harry is his care worker, Rob, who despite being painfully on the wrong end of a cricket bat during the flatmate incident, is still determined to help Harry settle back into his old home. / Even with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's, Harry is not unaware of the disruptive impact his arrival has had. / His capacity for navigating his new circumstances may have diminished, but for now he has retained his dry sense of humour. / As the pernicious disease slowly erases the man he used to be, a very different Harry is revealed. A fractious relationship with Theresa as she grew up has left her angry and resentful and Harry's occasional outbursts and regressions are a stinging reminder of her youth. / One evening during a family meal, Harry fixates on the noisy crows on the roof, just as he often did before his diagnosis, and tries to tackle the problem in his old and impetuous manner. It's a terrifying wakeup call for Theresa as she realises she must take the chance to rebuild her relationship with her father while he still remembers her. / Harry's Home is an authentic, gently funny and emotional play touching upon the day-to-day realism of living with a dementia sufferer, and a reminder that whatever is slowly being lost, there may still be time left to mend old hurts, build bridges and create new memories for those who are left behind.

Harry's Home - Part 2 Chapter 3: 12 April 2026: this show was fabulous. The only problem I had is that it isn’t available everywhere, and I can understand people not finding it because of that. However, I would suggest that you do seek it out, because it’s a superb listen, albeit for me a hard listen in places. The main character in the piece, Harry, has Alzheimer’s, and his family are obviously touching around the subject. This very much hit home with me after my mum passed away with Alzheimer’s last August, and even now that’s a raw subject. We moved to be closer to my mum, as back then we had unconfirmed thoughts that she might have been going through it. This is what is essentially a five part radio play, based on an actual stage play that Hannah Puddlefoot wrote and staged, with the production of the audio version by Helen Quigley. Directed by Andrew Mark Sewell. The voice cast includes the incredible Phil Davis (Quadrophenia) as the title character, and Nicola Bryant (Doctor Who), among others. A superb show, with an incredibly poignant ending.

BirdNote Daily - 30 Oct 2023: *There's More Than One Way to Climb a Tree - No bird is better adapted for climbing up a tree trunk than a woodpecker. The foot of this Pileated Woodpecker is ideal for clinging, and its relatively short legs allow it to anchor itself securely. When traveling upward, the woodpecker's a master. But hitching down? / Not so much - usually they will fly. / Nuthatches, however, can easily go up and down. This White-breasted Nuthatch walks over the bark of trees by grasping with one leg while using the other for a prop. It also has a rear-facing toe equipped with a long, sharp claw that's ideal for hanging on while heading downward.
