Sunday Stuff

Sunday February the 21st 2021

I got up late, at about 2 o’clock I think, because I didn’t get to sleep until late.

I fitted in picking up an eBay parcel from Argos, and going to Asda, before finishing off the edit for a new episode of Pods Like Us, which this time is the show with Ethan from Fans On The Run (and When They Was Fab), which was built from recordings made in the middle of November and last week (the middle of February).

When I got back home for a break, I snagged a small few seconds segment out of the episode before posting it online.

There were a few things at work, and I didn’t get everything listened to that I intended on, but still got a fair bit of listening done!

Podcast notes (through Siri while driving).

When They Was Fab Ed & Lonnie (Ethan having a week off)!speaking with Danny Kristensen from The Fab Five. They discussed their shared Beatle memories, and Danny did some great live interpretations. Gerry MarsdenRay Charles. How Do You Do It... The Fourmost, Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas.

The Gerry Anderson Podcast - Question is if Chris Dale plays recorder while wearing check pants, what do Jamie Anderson and Richard James play, and what are they wearing at the time? Fab fact - the Thunderbirds episode Terror In New York City was inspired by a store in Japan being moved inch by inch while people were still shopping to make room for a road! They want a darts player for episode 180! Continued interview with submariner Kelvin Murray. He quoted both Amundsen (“Adventure is just bad planning”) and Shackleton (“better to be an alive donkey than a dead lion!”). Fascinating background, and loved the mention of a space program he’s advising on called Blue AbyssChris carries on his randomiser by commentating on the Terrahawks episode Expect The Unexpected Part 2. Don’t forget they have a post show sequence each time!

Filmsack - ScottBrianBrian & Randy looking at the great film Twelve Monkeys. Randy has a problem with filmmaker Terry Gilliam replying too much on weird crazy people. He likes the look of shots, but the craziness gets in the way of the story moving at a good pace. “They gotta wash the Blind Date off of” Bruce Willis! “ with time travel, you’ve got to be naked. I don’t know why!” Spooky that one of Bruce Willis’s lines was “all I see are dead people!” Randy questions a main character twist that’s an intentional misdirection, saying that it makes that character pointless. I’d say the point is that in essence what the people who sent Bruce Willis’s character back in time for wasn’t exactly correct. They go into a conversation about what music they used to play in electrical stores to test out car stereos. Scott used to test them out with Alice In ChainsRandy went in with a soul music compilation. “come to the past, have a few drinks!” Brian Ibbott’s Twitter Post was pure mathematical class!

Yes Music Podcast -presented by Kevin and Mark, looking at what happened after Tony Kaye left Yes and the music business completely. Part one! They were lacking inspiration after the Talk album, despite its relatively small interest by their audience and the critics. It wasn’t how Jon Anderson saw the future he wanted in Yes, abut both Trevor Rabin called it was “the pinnacle of my career with Yes!” Tony wasn’t pleased with the album, and in some ways he possibly felt that Trevor playing a lot of keyboards was taking his role. After eight months of wondering what to do, they split and the way was made to get the classic line-up back together for Keys To Ascension. I actually didn’t know that Tony played with David Bowie. I wonder if he was ever on recordings that Rick Wakeman appeared on as well? I’ll stop taking notes now because it’s interesting, and you should listen to it! He also worked with Billy Sherwood, the present Yes bass player!

Tabletop Genesis - here Mike LordTom RochetWatt StacyEllie Nottinger & Simon Godfrey talk about the album Wind & Wuthering, the final album to feature Steve Hackett, and their second album of 1976. Opening song Eleventh Earl Of Marr opens with the opening lines of the novel The Flight Of The Heron by DK Browster. I agree with Mike that Rutherford’s bass on this album is fabulous. Presenter Mike chose the same as me for favourite song on the album - Blood On The Rooftops

Things We Said Today - hosted by Ken MichaelsAllan Kozinn, and Darren Devivo are joined by author David Bedford. The subject of the show this time is the effect of country music on the Liverpool music scene. I find the subject of musical and cultural cross-pollination as fascinating, and went into this subject t with my guest spot on Gill’s show The Mindbuzz, which we’ll continue in a future show hopefully.

I ran out of time to listen to the rest o the list!
